  • Assento de Nascimento (photocopy) of Portuguese spouse. (Assento de Nascimento is the birth certificate issued by Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon, Portugal)
  • Birth Certificate of the Applicant (Non-Portuguese National).
  • Document of Identification – Indian Passport along with Aadhaar Card or Election Card or Driving License with correct details as per birth certificate.
  • Police Clearance Certificate.
  • Two witnesses preferably Portuguese Nationals who are of applicant’s age or above.

Time required to conclude the Marriage Registration Process is approx. 2 – 6 months from the date of submission of your documents to the Conservatoria do Registo Civil, Lisbon, Portugal subject to completion of verification of the Birth / Marriage certificate of the spouse. You will need to provide all the mandatory documents in order to do so.

Time required to conclude the Birth Registration Process is approximately 10 to 12 months from the date of submission of your documents to the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais, Lisbon, Portugal and subject to completion of verification of the Birth Certificate of the applicant. This is based on current timelines and is subject to change.
+What are Assento de Nascimento and Assento de Casamento?
Assento de Nascimento is the birth certificate issued by Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon, Portugal & Assento de Casamento is the marriage certificate issued by the Conservatoria do Registo Civil in Lisbon, Portugal. Both these certificates can be obtained on completion of Registration of birth and marriage of one of the parents in Portugal
+What happens if the name on my birth certificate doesn’t match the name in the passport?
It depends on the difference. In some cases, like when the names are direct translations of names into Portuguese, you most probably won’t have to go through the process of changing it. However, this is not always the case, so it is best to check with our consultants before proceeding.
+How long does it take to get my Portuguese citizenship through my spouse?
Time required to conclude the Portuguese Nationality Registration process for Spouse is approximately 12 months or more from the date of submission of documents to the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais, Lisbon, Portugal which is subject to completion of verification of the Birth Certificate of the applicant by the competent authorities.
+Where do I submit the request for verification of birth or marriage certificate?
Civil Registrar and Sub Registrar of Goa are instructed not to entertain the request from the Portuguese Consulate for verification of Birth / Death and Marriage, under these guidelines all the Civil Registrar and Sub Registrar of Goa has stopped the Birth / Death and Marriage verification process received from the Portuguese Consulate in Goa.

As per the new directions the Portuguese Consulate will have to route all the Birth / Death and Marriage verification request through the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.

The Ministry of External Affairs will forward the request to the Ministry of Home Affairs and then to the State Registrar and the State Registrar will have to forward this verification request to the respective Civil Registrar cum Sub Registrar.

The Civil Registrar cum Sub Registrar will then comply to the verification request and forward its reply back in the same route to the State Registrar, then to Ministry of Home affairs, then to Ministry of External Affairs and finally to the Portuguese Consulate.
+Can I apply for Portuguese citizenship directly if my parents were born in Goa before 1961?
The Portuguese Nationality process has to start with an individual whose birth is registered in Goa before 19th December 1961.

After the birth and marriage of this individual is registered at the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais / Conservatoria do Registo Civil in Lisbon, Portugal, his / her descendants are eligible to apply for Portuguese Nationality / Portuguese Passport.
+How long does it take to get a Portuguese passport?
It may take as long as four to five years to get a Portuguese passport, that too, only if you possess all the relevant documents/evidence to claim the citizenship.

  • The Nationality Application can only be submitted after the full registration (birth and marriage certificate) of your parents (or at least one of the parents) as Portuguese in the Registo Civil Português.
  • If the birth and the marriage certificates of the parents (or of at least one of the parents) are already registered in the Registo Civil Português, you just have to submit the respective references (numbers and year of the birth and marriage certificate).
